"Great Blu-Ray plus Amazon Video on Demand" 2009-09-23
By D. Kraus (Erie, CO United States)
I don't have another Blu-Ray player to compare this to, but it works perfectly. Yes, it loads a bit slower than my old DVD, but that is going to happen with any blu-ray player. The picture and sound are great and it was simple to set up and use.

The biggest reason I purchased this is because it has Amazon Video on Demand. Some players have Netflix or other streaming media, but I opted for Amazon because you can buy and rent without a subscription. Setting up the account at Amazon was easy, and they have a pretty good selection of TV and Movies to choose from. You can order on your PC and choose to have it play on your TV (when you are ready to watch) or just order it by using the VieraCast option on the blu-ray player. Honestly, the interface on VieraCast isn't that great (yet), so doing it on the computer is much easier.

I was afraid that with my set up I might get buffering issues, but that is not the case. I use an apple TimeCapsule to wirelessly transmit to an apple Airport Express that is then connected to the blu-ray player. I watched an HD movie the other night and did not have any buffering issues at all. Perfect. The picture and sound quality are very good as well.

I should also mention that VieraCast currently also serves up weather information, stocks, and youtube. I'm sure they will add more content through flash upgrades in the future.

So, this is a good blu-ray player - especially for the price. The big bonus is Amazon Video On Demand and who knows what else they will add to VieraCast.

"Exactly what I hoped for." 2009-09-13

After six weeks of use, I can recommend the Panasonic DMP BD80 to anyone looking for a terrific Blu Ray player with 7.1 Analog output. I had waited for the price to come down on a full function Blu Ray player that would alow me to have 5.1 and 7.1 Surround Sound via my non-HDMI Yamaha 7.1 channel receiver and this was the answer. Great PQ and fantastic audio with all of the current Dolby Digital and DTS features. As mentioned in other reviews, this is a slow loading puppy but with the qreat performance in the video and sound departments, that's not a problem for me. Upconversion of standard discs is as good as I've seen on any player. Five stars for sure.

I must agree that the Panasonic Customer service is pretty lame, but the machine is great. It's Profile 2 and firmware updates via the net are probably super easy via an Ethernet connection (I don't have one) but it's also fairly easy to download the updates via the Panasonic website and burn them to a CD for installation from disc (which is how I do it). Don't count on Panasonic mailing you an update disc, if I had waited for the promised disc via the mail, I would still be waiting.

Great machine and the price is now in the $250 range.

"Component HD on HD CRT tv ROCKS. Multichannel analog audio sounds great." 2009-09-13
By Sonyslave (Honolulu HI)
Totally happy with this unit! My old HD Sony tv has 1080i component inputs (my tv predates HDMI) and the picture is STUNNING! No complaints whatsoever.

The sound quality of the various HD codecs is noticeably better than DVD, I'm using the analog multichannel audio outputs to feed my old Onkyo TX-SR601 and AR HC6 speakers in a very small living room, and I'm totally happy with the quality (I work as an audio engineer for broadcast television).

Have not even tried the VieraCast yet. Will hook it up one of these days.

 "Just not that good" 2009-09-12
By M. Patterson (Cleveland, Oh)
This unit is very slow to start up. Slow to move from one menu to the next. Just plain slow. This unit is not user friendly and difficult to navigate I'm not happy with the remote at all, with no apparent thought given to the logic of the layout.

 "Outstanding Sound and picture!" 2009-09-11

Panasonic DMP-BD80

Like most others I did a lot of research on this and other players and could not find anything that compared in the price range. I bought it through Amazon from Electronics Expo, it arrived quickly with no hassle.

Hooked it up put a blu disk in and it was spectacular. Even on my 130" screen (Sharp Projector Dai-lite screen, the picture was sharp colors were incredible. Skin tones were natural gray scale and shadows were also excellent.

This unit has 7.1 channel analog audio with an onboard converter and the sound is awesome. After several weeks I like the sound from the onboard converter that I do the Digital hookup (HDMI) using my pre-pro. Panasonic has hit it out of the park with this player.

By the way the player is also Blu-Ray version 2 compatable for live feeds over the internet.
