"Finally a Bluray player that meets the hype" 2008-11-26
By Edgar Betancourt (WI)
This player is the promise of Bluray fully delivered. As before, video is spectacular. Audio is spectacular in every codec as well. DTS master audio (not included in previous sony products except PS3)and Dolby HD are fantastic. The internal decoding and full bandwith 7.1 PCM output is a great plus for all of us that have audiophile equipment that does not include internal decoders for the new formats. This also ensures that users of HDMI version 1.1 equipment don't have to fret about having 1.3 compliant equipment to enjoy the rewards of completely uncompressed 7.1 surround. Works beautifully with my Rotel 1069 preamp through HDMI. However, best of all, the player is finally fast. For those that have owned previous generation bluray players the most annoying thing about the technology was the patience testing load times. That was the bad old days, welcome to the good days, plop in the disc and go. In my expirience, even with the fast load feature set to off it is at least twice as fast (if not faster) as my departed BDPS2000ES. The menus and additional features work seamlessly and instantly, no more "processing time" hastle. I'm using it with an Elite pro110 plasma and can attest that its video fidelity is reference quality, it simply doesn't get better than this, for any price. Build quality is impressive, the player feels like its built from a ton of bricks and its completely silent in operation, the fan is inaudible (at least I have never heard it). The internet connection is excellent, just plug and go. In fact, this player has essentially zero negatives from any performance standpoint, NONE. Its not a particularly attractive piece of gear, simply a box with a tray in the front, but that is fine. Which, of course, leads to the only negative, its price. For those that want the very best in videophile equipment, the price is justified simply because its performance is, for the time being, second to none in all parameters, better yet, it demonstrates that the technology has finally reached fruition. This player is the first evidence that bluray is now a mature technology with no performance or functional compromises. Hopefully all its funtional advantages will trickle down to more affordable players soon. BTW, anyone that dismisses this player as an expensive alternative to a PS3, has not used it, or at least has not used with gear that will plainly show the significant differences in audio and video performance. Very highly recommended.

One more thing...... The picture of the player is inaccurate that is the BDPS2000ES, Cheers!

 "Best Blu Ray player...period!" 2008-11-21
By M. Skop (Norcross, GA United States)
I just got my BDP-S5000es yesterday. I had been using Sony's original BDP-S1 in our home theater and have enjoyed its picture and audio quality for the past 2 years. I have auditioned other Blu-ray players including the Pioneer Elite series, but never really saw or heard any clear cut reason to spend $$$$ to upgrade - until now.

The BDP-s5000es is an enormous improvement in both video and audio quality of any of the units that I have tried.

First, the picture. Stunning is the only way I can describe it. I am veiwing Blu ray movies through a 1080p projector on a 120" screen. If there are any problems with the image in terms of color, saturation or clarity, you'll see it with the picture that large. It is flawless. The few scenes I have been able to play so far all have better contrast, greater depth and more intensity than my previous player. In short, it looks as good as film to my eyes.

The sound is equally as impressive. Up until now, I have been using the audio processor in my Krell preamp to decode the 5.1 and 7.1 soundtracks with results that were far superior to the analog output of my older player. The downside was that I couldn't decode the Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD signals that many of the discs now have. The BDP-s5000es has and outstanding built in decoder for these HD formats and an equally impressive analog output stage that allows for the most realistic recorded audio presentation I have ever heard. The difference isn't subtle, but it is difficult to describe. An example of what I am talking about is in the the James Bond movie "Casino Royale". In one scene, James and Vesper walk out onto a terrace after losing a poker game to his rival. In the Dolby Digital soundtrack, the sounds of the city are all there in the background - clear, clean and pristine - a well recorded sountrack. However, when I played same scene using the Dolby TrueHD soundtrack through the analog outputs of the 5000es, it sounded like - correction - it felt like the walls of my room disappeared and I was outdoors. It was startling. It didn't sound like a great recording, it made me feel like I was there. The subtle spatial and sensory information that is lacking from many recordings was all there to be heard and felt.

As for the setup, it was very quick and easy. There was one small quirk that I noticed. Because I am using the players decoder and analog outputs, I needed to go into the audio setup of the Sony to adjust speaker levels and positions. The setup process went quickly enough as I was able to match all of the speaker levels up or down in 1/2dB increments except for the subwoofer. I needed to boost the output to the sub by 1.5dB but the Sony would only allow me to turn it down, not increase the level. I had to start over using the sub's output as the reference level and match the other speakers to it. Not a big problem, but a bit strange.

The network connection went without a hitch. I plugged in the cable and it immediately checked to see if there was an update for the firmware. This is an important reason to consider Sony when making a purchase. As I mentioned, I have the original Sony Blu Ray player and after 2 1/2 years, they are still offering software improvements which allow it to work flawlessly with the latest BD titles. I have updated that machine at least 7 times (from v1.1 to v4.2), all for free, and each time the machine works faster and better. There are not many companies out there that continue to support their products with free upgrades and for such a long period of time. Most just want you to buy the newest model rather than improve your current one.

Also, I saw a previous review about the loading time and thought I'd respond. There is a setting in the setup menu that decreases the time to boot up and load a disc dramatically by leaving the machine in kind of a standby mode. I didn't time it, but I'd say the few discs I've tried to play so far loaded in under 10 seconds with this mode turned on. The downside is that the unit uses more power to do this because it keeps the fan and processor running even when the power switch is off. My guess is that the previous reviewer has not turned that feature on (the default setting for this feature is "off").

Easy instructions & remote contol usage.

Very nice features.

Only down side is the player does not come with a HDMI cable.

It would have been nice to include that for the price. Or at least mention it on the purchase site.

"Good, but not as terriffic as we expected" 2009-06-26
By J.P, (MI)
We have a sony XBR6, wall mounted. Blu-rays look very nice. I have to admit that I never knew scenes could look so beautiful. Even desert scenes are mind blowing.. if the disc is new.

The major con of the player is that if a movie is scratched just a bit, it will not play. It skips and freezes often. We like to rent movies before we buy them and a lot of the time our 360 played them perfectly while this just froze and did nothing but make us cuss. If an Xbox 360 can play the movie, why can't this comparably high priced specific blu-ray player do the same when its made FOR THAT ONE JOB.

 "Great Blu-Ray player" 2009-06-12
By E. Bluebaugh
I have had this player for several months now. It has worked with every Blu-Ray disc that I have played in it. It does everything that a person could need. It decodes DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD in the player and will output it to a receiver over HDMI or 7.1 analog outputs. It will also bitstream the DTS-HD and TrueHD via HDMI if your receiver will decode them. If your receiver is older, it can output Dolby Digital over the optical/coaxial outputs.

Has BDLive, but that doesn't interest me. It's nice to have the option though.

Definitely worth the price to get the onboard decoding of the HD audio formats.

 "Fast and Responsive" 2009-08-03
By Andrew Siew (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia)
The BDP-S350 is about a year old, and is showing no sign of slowing down at the moment. Thanks to the fact that all BD players are upgradable, the latest firmware upgrade for S350 has rendered it compatible with the most recent Blu-ray titles.

Although the loading time for S350 can't compete with a Playstation 3, it is probably one of the fastest machines in the market. Loading time for earlier BD titles is as fast as most DVDs, while newer titles takes less than a minute to play.

The picture quality of this player depends alot on the quatlity of the source, as most BD and DVD players, but from what I can see so far, the S350 performs the best 1080 upscaling for DVDs. Since my S350 was purchased in Singapore, the player is shipped without DVD region lock so I can put any DVD into the machine right out of the box.

When paired with the cosmetically matching HT-SF2300, the current firmware decodes every kind of audio stream into LPCM and feeds it straight into the SF2300. There is no option to turn this feature off at the moment, as in to output the original bit stream. This may be a turn off for some prospective buyers. The S350 also outputs a blank 5.1 LPCM flag when the source disc is in pause mode so the SF2300 doesn't switch to analog or idle mode when the S350 is in pause. Anyone who owns the HT-SF2300 or any low end Hi-Fi receiver knows it is quite annoying when your receiver goes idle and then tries to resume decoding when the BD/DVD player resumes playback. You tend lose a second or two of the sound.

The xcross graphic user interface is very pleasant to the eyes, and easy to navigate through. Too bad the xcross menu does not appear to be in high definition; the text and graphic look very soft under my 40" screen.

Highly recommended for speed and responsiveness, especially considering the price tag.

"Great Blu-ray player at a decent price." 2009-07-29
By C. Bennett
This is one of the cheaper models yes, but it's still a great machine.

I've been using it for about 4 months now. I've only had a few issues with the player, one, it wouldn't play the new Skynet version of T2. I ended up having to update the firmware and while the Blu-ray took a long time to load, it did eventually play the film. By doing so I realized that the firmware I had was one of the first updates available (I believe there's now over 20) so as soon as you get this hooked up you're going to want to update.

Second, the player seems to have an issue with DVD-R's. For some reason when I put a DVD-r that's not formatted to a DVD (meaning I've just dropped various video files onto the disc) it doesn't want to play it. The picture menu comes up, even though the files are all AVI. So if I want to watch a movie I've burned I have to format it to a DVD using the program "convertxtodvd." Not too big of a deal though.

These two issues are small and for me definitely do not detract from the score or quality of the machine.

I guess I do have one more complaint, but this concerns most players also, you still have to buy hdmi cables for the best quality picture, I think that these should be included.

Alright, done with the bad, now onto the good.

*It's easy to hook up and figure out.

*for most Blu's it's fast loading.

*it's hackable for those of you who want to play DVD's from other regions.

*the quality is great for being low priced it is IMO one of the better players that I've had the pleasure of using.

*It's very sleek looking. Looks great sitting next to my flat panel.

So there you have it. The good outweighs the bad. Very high quality machine, exactly what you'd expect from a brand like Sony. So what are you waiting for? Buy it!

"Sony does NOT live up to its word" 2009-07-06
By Ricardo Colon (San Juan, PR)
Purchased the Sony BDP-S350 BD unit last Christmas, and it has generally performed reliably well, and with the high quality one comes to expect from this technology.

I give it a failing grade because of a few quirks. First of all, I noticed right away that this player does not have many features that have come standard in DVD players (and VCRs) for years, such as Frame Advance (i.e. slow motion). My guess is that Sony will add these features later on new models to justify one shelling out a couple of hundred again for those features in a new unit. I have not checked other models of different brands nor researched this subject so I may be mistaken here, and it may actually be a technological hurdle.

Secondly, the unit requires firmware updates to play some of the latest offerings (e.g. Terminator 2, Skynet Edition). For those of us who can't connect the player to the Internet nor burn the firmware update in a disc from a computer (most CD burning programs that come with a new computer lack image burning capabilities unless one purchases a software upgrade), Sony offers to send a free CD with the update, which may be ordered by visiting their website. I ordered mine two months ago, and I'm still waiting for it, oh should I say I am no longer waiting for it. Sony has just lost a customer.

"not really that great of a player" 2009-08-11
By B. Anderson (Mountain View, CA, USA)
This player is not worth the extra money unless you really need wireless. It can't stream netflix.

The video quality is okay, it is on par with the Samsung bdp 1600 that I use for streaming.

I have this connected to a sony kdl40v5100 bravia tv and sony 7.1 av receiver strda2400es.

The startup time is 30 seconds. The remote is downright silly. The unit will play blue ray disks that I create on the Sony vgnaw290 laptop, that the Samsung blue ray player won't play. In all fairness,

the Samsung bdp1600 lockups drive me crazy, but the sound popping that the sony bdp560 produces whilst it is shifting video modes is annoying.

"Wireless in a Sony Blu-ray player but mediocre remote" 2009-08-09
By Irvin M. Haas (Indianapolis, IN USA)
The Sony BDP-S560 is a capable Blu-ray player.

This is basically an updated 360 with wireless connectivity for BD Live functions. Sony finally got it right by building wireless connectivity into the player itself. Previously, you needed to have a PS3 or buy a wireless add-on to have this feature. My viewing room is too far away from a wired connection, so wireless was the only way to go. The 560 loads quickly and has most of the standard features you would expect from Sony.

Setup was very fast and simple including the wireless feature. You just needed to search for your network and then manually input your password--that was it!

The only negative feature I could find was in the 560's remote. Sony took a step backward by offering less features than its predecessor, the BDP-S550. The last remote offered a lighted display. In addition, you had an open/close button which this new player does not offer. Buttons are not clustered logically around the center button . Even the BDP-S350, the former lower end player offered a better remote. Of course for $63 you can buy the 550's remote from Sony and use it with the 560.

The Sony BDP-S560 is a good player with the added wireless feature. It could have been an even better player with a decent remote.

"Wifi works on a MAC!" 2009-08-07
By Clement Singarajah (Phoenix, AZ)
Easy set up but as usual us Mac users get the short end of the stick. It was tedious to set up the internet connection via my Airport Extreme network and the keystroke entry is terrible. The Nintendo Wii was FAR easier to set up. However it seems to connect to my WifI Network using WPA2 encryption etc. Bear in mind for an inexperienced user of networks this might be somewhat complicated. I had to use the Wireless and Manual set up pathway. The instructions provided are not very useful in this regard (for Mac users at least)

Otherwise good picture and sound so far.

I am waiting to try out the BD live feature.

My old Pioneer Elite AV receiver uses Dolby 5.1 surround and this works well.

Nice esthetics on outside, quite light compared to the BDP S550 which I have as well.

It would be better if it had Netflix or Apple TV compatibility but I have other devices (Roku) that can do these functions.

"Wi Fi Helps Significantly, but the little things bring it down...." 2009-08-07
By Molokoplus (Honolulu)
Pros: Small footprint. Fast START-UP time (more on this later). Built in Wi-Fi. Low price.

Cons: Remote buttons not logically laid out, easy to press other buttons by mistake. No remote backlighting! No eject button!!! Load time versus play time confusion.

Summary: My player finally arrived yesterday and was a replacement for my original Sony BDP-S1 (Profile 1.0) which I paid $999 for at Best Buy in Dec. 2006. I was one of the early Blu ray pioneers!

Setup was a snap. I was on my home network within minutes. The WiFi makes all the difference in the world and was checking out some BD Live stuff later that day. Network updates will be a snap. The advertised 6 second START-UP time is correct, it does start quickly as long as you leave the device enabled for fast start up which you do during the initial setup process. This does makes it less energy efficient, just how the "instant on" feature of TV's work. Be advised that the fast start-up means just that. It powers on and is ready to load the disc in 6 seconds, however, if you have a disc with lots of JAVA features (as most are these days), you still have to wait for the JAVA features to load which averaged anywhere from 20 seconds to almost a minute. I was sort of disappointed in this as I understood it to mean that after popping in a disc I could begin watching it in 6 seconds! Not! I think they are playing with words on the advertised load time. You still have to wait for JAVA enabled discs to load but believe me, compared to what I was used to with my previous profile 1.0 player, it is a Godsend. I will say though that when a Blu ray player does finally comes out that can both start-up and load a JAVA enabled Blu ray disc in under 10 seconds, I will buy it hands down. Other than that, the other gripe I have is the crummy remote. Very cheaply made, too small, no back-light and button layout is terrible. I found myself fumbling around pushing the wrong buttons and there seems to be have been no thought to how the buttons are laid out. I am going to shop around for another remote for this player, perhaps there is one out there. These 2 faults keep the player from getting 4 or 5 stars IMHO.

"Exceeding all expectations for this first-time blu user" 2009-08-03
By Douglas Burkett (Central FL)
After thoroughly enjoying my HDTV and the high-quality of video and sound associated with HD from my cable/satellite and DVD upconverter I was eager to upgrade to see my favorite films on blu ray. I waited for several things before purchasing my first blu unit...for a couple of features I wanted to be available at my price point, for the blu ray/HD DVD battle to be settled and for the versions of firmware to be more universal. Once that was done all of my needs pointed to this unit and I have been happy since.

Up front I will say there are several things that drew me to this unit. One was the Sony brand (I am a loyal Sony user but I am also not a blind follower). Second was the fact that I also needed a new sound system to handle the quality of the blu ray sound and this Sony blu ray player was a companion to the Sony sound system I wanted to get (the HTSS360). The two look great together with identical black color, faceplate size and design. For both the blu ray player and the sound system for under $500 it was an easy sell.

The one other very important feature this unit had for me was the on-board processing of the True Dolby HD and HD DTS soundtracks. Having the blu ray player itself process these means you do not need to have the HD sound processed by your sound system-you can have these sent through the PCM channel and they are a definite upgrade from the regular 5.1 soundtracks. To explain, it's like the difference between a HDTV that is HDTV 'ready' and one that has a built-in tuner. In this case the receiver or sound system (with the PCM) is 'HD sound ready' and the blu player acts as the tuner. So you do NOT have to have a receiver or sound system that specifically processes HD audio to enjoy it.

This player was simple to set up with the connection of the HDMI cable and the nice-looking, user-friendly, on-screen menu it offers. The on-screen menu is used for a quick set-up and can easily be accessed to make any changes to your settings.

As for performance, the loading time for this unit is much quicker than I expected as a first-time blu user. It takes just a couple of seconds longer than my DVD upconverter but the video and sound quality are worth the wait of 2-3 extra seconds. Other people who have earlier blu models say the loading time on this unit is pretty quick comparatively. As I said, the picture produced and the HD sound are spectacular and make me very happy making the blu upgrade.

Other thoughts:

Yes, as others have mentioned there is no 'eject' button on the remote and it would be nice to have one. Otherwise, the remote has every function on it I would want. I love being able to pull up menus for the discs while the film is in progrss rather than having to stop playback to get to the menu.

It does not have the built-in wi-fi that is now available on other units but firmware updates can be done by connecting an Internet connection (or you can even download updates from Sony's website and update the player with a disc). I almost spent the extra money on the S560 player with the built-in wi-fi but from what I have heard it does not support streaming Netflix (which would have been my main reason for wanting the built-in wi-fi to begin with). I have not seen any BD live content that seems (to me) worth connecting to the Internet for.

So far every disc I have watched (both new releases and older ones) loaded with no problems and played seamlessly and without any problems.

This unit does indeed upconvert DVDs but I didn't see any improvement over the Sony 5-disc upconverter I already have and plan to continue to use the upconverter for my DVDs and just use the blu player for the blu discs.

I do wish there was a 5-disc changer available but as of yet there is not one to my knowledge. I planned to wait for a 5-disc changer but with blu ray you don't normally have a movie split over two discs as you did with standard DVDs so I decided to go ahead and purchase this blu unit and I have thoroughly enjoyed it and have no reservations in recommending it.

"Great for Blu-Ray - Horrid for Upconverting" 2009-07-31
By Kelly Egbert (Salt Lake City, UT)
I bought my first player a month ago after looking over as many reviews as I could find. After getting home and setting things up, all I had were standard DVD's to play. During playback the picture would drop out to a black screen but the audio would continue. This would last 2-5 seconds and then the picture would return. This would happen continuously during playback every 10 minutes or so. I tried a couple of different DVD's and it did the same on each one.

So, I returned the player and thought maybe I just had a defective unit. I exchanged it for another of the same type. I set this new unit up and by now I had received some Blu Ray DVD's from Netflix to try on the player. The picture and sound were amazing and I did not have any issues with the picture dropping out. This was a couple of weeks ago.

Yesterday I tried watching another regular DVD on this player and guess what...same problem as before, more picture dropouts. So, I returned the unit and will try again with another brand.

If you plan on only watching Blu Ray DVD's this is a great unit. But if you have a collection of regular DVD's I would stay away!
